FAQ

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions:

When should I put out my bees in the Portland area?

Typically March

Where can I acquire tubes in the Portland area?

The most economical is to purchase empty and bee-filled tubes from the Home Orchard Society (a local 5013c). For less than $7 you get 27 12″ empty easy tear tubes, which you fold in half. These are great for our PVC house (See their excellent flyer)

Some retail shops that we’ve seen carry them: Backyard Bird Shop,
many of the plant shops will carry them during the right time of year as well: Portland Nursery, Seven Dees, etc.

Do I need to protect the bees in any way?

During the summer, Mason bees are able to  stay in their houses but need to be protected from weather, other insects, and birds/small animals. It is best that after they stop pollinating and the tubes are filled, place the tubes in a mesh bag and move them carefully to a closed area such as a shed or garage. Don’t bring them in your house; it’s too warm.

How long will they stay active, when do they stop being active?

Mason bees live for about 6-8 weeks, depending on when they’re put outside in March. You can tell that they’re done pollinating when the tubs are filled.

Should I do anything with them after they are inactive?

A few weeks after you think you see the last bee, it will  be best to move them into a location where they will be sheltered.

Should I leave them out over the winter?

Definitely not. Like bears, mason bees go into hibernation but the constant rain that we experience in the Northwest can be harmful to bees.

Where can I get more information?

Crown bees has really helpful information along with a monthly email letter that tells you what to do with your bees each month.
